Image of the Mind Studios

Since I am retiring in June (which only means I will take the time to work on my cars whenever I feel like it) I also need to be thinking about selling IMS. That will take place via a Board of Directors, with each Board position being sold. I will be selling 45% of the operation, so that I can remain involved until I finish my important projects.

I am also considering buying a machine shop and reconfiguring it to meet our robotics & animatronic needs, and that will be part of IMS.  We hold the majority of shares in patents pertainiñ I'm to proprietory medical technology that are highly valuable and will be attached to the machining operation.

I will address all of this further, as I add to this post, but that is all for now

Sound/Green-Screen Stage

A Gnome-skull and modified joints
for puppets

I have  made mention of this in other posts, but the Green-Screen for use with puppetry is an important aspect of this project that has, for the most part, been on hold, while publishing activities are being focused on.

However, I have been working on a three-camera (HDV) setup for use with the stage and the supplies for the stage are in place, only requiring completion of negotiations regarding facilities before I can begin setting that up. Once that is concluded, in accordance with our objectives,  I will begin setting up the stage and doing some video tests.  There is much that needs to be done around the studio but, should other producers come on-board, then we can advance in any number of arenas either at IMS or not, depending on whatever agreements we end up making.

An Early version of The Gnome-sized Book

I was discussing this today, and although I have produced this up to this point, I have no objection to having a number of other producers come on board. There are many ancillary markets which can & need to be addressed and there is much that can be done from Image of the Mind Studios facilities,  but there are other things that can be done from other studios also.

So I just want to convey that I am open to discussing many aspects of how to fully exploit the potential of this project and I do not necessarily need to be in control of that.  I will if I have to, but my influence only goes so far. So, taking on partners poses no problem for me, so long as we make the right amicable agreement and those partners provide both the correct resources to advance the project and to compensate me for my investment thus far.

   Standard stuff; Joint Venture Agreement.

Licensing, Options, the Joint Venture

I have not used this blog site as extensively as others, because it is intended for specific subjects, hence the point of this post.

To Summarize the situation;

I've concluded that we have finally reached the point of completion where we can move forward in a realistic fashion with other significant aspects of the project.

I say this because, advancement in the film and theatre environments is wholly contingent upon the Illustrated Storybooks being close enough to marketability and distribution.

The whole purpose of the Illustrated Storybooks is to build an audience, or at least support a wide ranging marketing campaign, for the project as a whole.

It is clear that the theatrical endeavor requires a specific progression of design, preparatíon and implementation. Having extensive experience in this process, I understand about the time frames and resources required for this.

Admittedly, I have remained in the non-union arena, although I have worked union jobs in both film and theatre, but most of my work has been non-union, specifically because I have worked in all areas of theatre and predominately as an independent filmmaker. The union environment has well defined roles which disallow crossing certain lines. So, I remained non-union for that reason.

Of course the reality is that the Industry is unionized at the higher levels. Hence, I have remained in the Development Arena.

Well, "The Gnomes of New Hope; Zach and Zebby's Grand Adventure" has reached the stage of development where is can be anticipated to become uplifted into the higher levels of Industry Operations. The reason for this is; it's viability.

The Libretto has been finished for many years. Much of the Music is finished, with only (relatively speaking) minor work to be done on scoring and some arrangement. We anticipate getting back to the music after the remaining Illustrations are completed for the Storybooks. All other work on the publishing materials and Limited Edition binding is finished and ready to proceed, the exception being that the most recent printer files are now being assembled. That assembly could take a month or two, depending on other work that demands attention. Even so, those publishing files will be using sketches, where the artwork is not finished yet.

We are closing in on refining the sketches into finished line drawings, which will be followed by watercoloring and then processing for insertion into the final layout. I believe this remaining work may be finished within a year and a half.

That being the case, I feel that it is appropriate to offer an Option on the project. Most specifically, on the Film & Television Rights. There are many other rights involved, but Film & Television are probably the most valuable, and frankly, I don't anticipate being able to implement production in those arenas through  Image of the Mind Studios, unless we build The Elder Gnomes Joint Venture with a Board of Directors composed of veterans of those Union Arenas.

Of course, there are numerous Terms & Conditions that come into play when selling an Option, but one possiblity that might be offered is a Buy-in to the Joint Venture. Either way, my immediate goal is to secure a minimum of $2M for my immediate use in securing my facilities, as the current situation is preventing advancement in regard to in-house production activities. Those funds would only be applied to the in immediate needs of the facilities, not production or personnel.

So that being the case, $2M would buy a two year Option (First Right of Refusal), after the Illustrated Storybooks are ready for distribution, for the Film &Television Rights, or a Buy-in for one Board Position under the present terms of The Elder Gnomes Joint Venture business plan.

Details of all this can be provided if there is serious discussion on the subject.

Industry Review Package

The first and most important goal in this publishing endeavor is the publish those books that make up The Industry Review Edition. That Industry Review also contains elements of the Business Plan  and addresses Management Structure, Primary and Secondary Markets for the Core Creative Materials, but also addresses a number of principle Ancillary Markets.

In regard to those Ancillary Markets, a number of them have been developed, in the prototype arena, since Image of the Mind Studios is primarily engaged in Development, with some degree of Pre-production and a limited degree of Production. The Business Plan addresses moving the larger product lines out of development, offering numerous option to implement progression, depending on the demand and financing parameters.

From the IMS standpoint, the project is advancing based on available resources, which has included Front Money provided on the basis of our Front Money Agreement. That agreement provides for a maximum return of three hundred percent under specific terms advantageous to our production process and giving us the maximum latitude for development. The Front Money is capped at $250k in capital and there is room for us to accept more funding via this agreement.

There is also an In-kind Agreement allowing for resources and supplies to be provided, which also allows for the same kind of return.

I will address each of these subject in separate posts.

The Three Volume Set

If you have been watching The Gnomes of New Hope blog, then you are aware that the full collection of "Zach and Zebby's Grand Adventure" involves seven fully illustrated books. "Fully Illustrated" meaning a graphics panel, containing knock-out or scene artwork, on each of the nearly 800 pages.

The first Illustrated Storybook book being Volume One ; an introduction to The Gnomes of New Hope and the next three books, being Volume Two, contains Scenes One through Nine which corresponds to Act One of the stage musical. Volume Three, contains Books Four through Seven, which consists of Scenes Ten through Twenty and corresponds to Act Two of the stage musical.

In addition to the Illustrated Storybooks there is also a Two Volume Libretto, which has illustrations to highlight the imagery of the scene and aid in design. Those illustrations were the inspiration for developing the Illustrated Storybooks. The Libretto is a technical theatre script, containing directing notes, such as blocking and business notes, and technical design notes, such as set, lighting and implementation, as well as the dialogue and lyrics. The Libretto will be included with the Industry Review Edition, making those presentation materials a Five Volume Set.

I will try to avoid rambling off subject, so I have moved my discussion of The Industry Review Package to it's own post. Refer to that post for the continuation of this line of thought.

Managing The Gnomes of New Hope

A page from Book Four showing how the sketches, awaiting completion, are being placed in lieu of the description panels to represent the finished illustration.

If you have been following the growth of "The Gnomes of New Hope; Zach and Zebby's Grand Adventure" you may be wondering why this all is taking so long?

You and me both! But here's the skinny on that. After I finished the Libretto (eons ago), which was taking place in conjunction with writing the music, I realized that publishing a Companion Storybook Edition would be the best way to develop an audience for the show.

Now, I have an extensive background in primarily technical theatre, but also a reasonable amount of performing as well. Performance was never really my goal, not seriously enough to make that a primary activity. Anyway, I have witnessed my share of costly mistakes in theatre. Not-the-least-of-which are shows that have a huge amount of energy in production but not enough of audience development. This leads to, at most, a two week run. The really sad thing about this is that, without a plan to move on, the crew of a limited run show disperses. Once that happens, it's very unlikely that the show will get mounted again, at least not without great difficulty.

It used to be said that recoupment of a show takes 21 weeks. That's five months! That's assuming everyone is properly paid and the show is mounted with professionals, not a bunch of volunteers, a sour subject for me.

So, the investment in mounting a show, especially a musical is substantial, before anyone steps foot on a stage, let alone performs before an audience.

Thus, utilizing every method to garner support for the endeavor is necessary, even critical. But more than that, it requires very careful balancing of the production elements both as a whole (marcocosm) and individually (microcosm).

So, in developing the project, it became clear that a published Companion Storybook would be the best tool for long term development of an audience.

As that Storybook was beginning to be crafted from the Libretto, it became clear that the Libretto itself needed some illustration to assist in visualizing the settings, which would need to be constructed for the stage. Not only settings, but costumes and characters as well. So the process of Illustration began to take place.

Well, that helped to fill out the Libretto, which only required an occasional illustration as reference. But as the Storybook began to take shape, another dilemma arose. How many illustrations should be in an Illustrated Storybook? After due consideration, I determined that every page of the Storybook needed some kind of artwork. Ha! Little did I know that the combination of making room for the artwork, embellishing in the basic story of the stage show and including the lyrics of the music, would create a Graphic Novel that would encompass seven books totalling 766 pages!

Even less did I realize that; with the complexities and magnitude of the publishing layout and multiple computer hard disc failures, the completion of this endeavor would extend over a twenty-five year period. It's now 2022 and this started in 1997. Of course, over that period, quite a bit more than just a Graphic Novel was developed.

But the publishing layout is virtually completed, only requiring final completion and insertion of missing illustrations, which is underway.

So, the biggest issue right now is a release schedule. Many alternative approaches to releasing the books have been considered. It gets down to holding back on the official release until all the books are done, done, with all the finished art in place and at least 1,000 copies of each book are inventoried on the shelf and ready to ship.

Optimally, it would be best to have production underway on all product versions, which, believe it or not, amounts to around forty product lines. And that's only for the published books. There are, literally, dozens of Ancillary Products, either in development or conceived of.

The work of Image of the Mind Studios is focused on development up to and including prototyping. Manufacturing, Marketing and Distribution are critical arenas that are only now being summarily addressed. Engaging with outside agencies for these aspect may be appropriate, given that the proper agreements, which include investment can be brought into play.

As it stands now, Books One through Three are complete and are being published, as Limited Edition Hand-stitched Books. Books Four, Six and Seven are almost complete, requiring relatively few illustrations. Book five is a bit more of a challenge because it consists of "The Gnomic Tales" a collection of five other stories that are comprised of the backstory to "Zach and Zebby's Grand Adventure" .

All of the finished books are being  inventoried in expectation of the release of the full collection. Orders for the Hand-stitched Books will be taken (for now Book One), however release is not yet determined, as numerous registrations need to take place first. Absolutely, Book One can be Released at any time, since it is an Introduction and can stand on it's own. But Books Two thru Seven are interdependent, meaning they need to all be complete and capable of being offered as a boxed set.

I will address more details of this at another time.

I welcome dialogue and I will be moving to establish and secure The Elder Gnomes Joint Venture. For that organization, I will be seeking to establish a Vested Board of Directors and I will be turning all of the Worldwide rights over to that Joint Venture.
